Rare & Historic Occupations

A total of 637 individuals buried at Brighton General Cemetery worked in occupations that are now rare, extinct or historically transformed. These include stonemasons, telegraph operators, bootmakers, brickmakers, coachbuilders, milk carters, fishermen, fishmongers, chimney sweeps, sawyers, tanners, upholsterers, wheelwrights and many other specialised trades that once shaped everyday life in Melbourne. Long before industrialisation, refrigeration, supermarkets, motor vehicles or modern communication systems, these trades were essential to building homes, supplying food, maintaining transport, crafting goods and supporting local communities. Today, many of these occupations have disappeared entirely or survive only in highly specialised forms. This cluster highlights the people whose working lives reflect a very different Melbourne — one built by hand, skill and labour.
