Adult Tuberculosis & Wasting Diseases (18+)

A total of 1284 individuals buried at Brighton General Cemetery died from adult tuberculosis or related wasting diseases. Long before antibiotics, conditions such as Phthisis, Consumption and Rheumatic Fever could progress slowly over months or years, often weakening the lungs, heart or immune system until everyday life became a struggle. These illnesses were among the most common causes of adult death in Victoria throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.
