Travis' interest in history began in 1992 when he commenced researching the Brighton General Cemetery (Vic) culminating in 2003 with the launch of his own website www.brightoncemetery.com. His entry on the Brighton General Cemetery can be seen in the Encyclopedia of Melbourne (2005).
In 1997, Travis instigated a community project to transcribe the headstone inscriptions of the Cheltenham Pioneer Cemetery on microfiche, described by the publisher as one of the best of its kind undertaken in Australia. Travis inaugurated the formation of the Brighton Cemetorians Inc. (2005-06) and the Friends of Cheltenham and Regional Cemeteries Inc (2007-14). He previously served on the committees of the Friends of St. Kilda Cemetery Inc. (2004-05) and the Friends of Boroondara (Kew) Cemetery Inc. (2006-07).
Travis has undertaken well over 5,200 research requests, has edited newsletters totalling 73 issues, published four books and designed and maintained a number of websites.
